POLITICO Europe built its “own the morning” positioning around its Brussels Playbook and London Playbook newsletters, turning them into audio formats consumed by policymakers and lobbyists across Europe.

POLITICO’s Playbook newsletters landed at 7 a.m. every weekday, just as readers were commuting — a timing conflict and a format that’s hard to read on the go. POLITICO Europe needed a new, more accessible way for subscribers to consume the daily newsletters.

POLITICO adopted the Amazon Polly WordPress plugin, co-built by AWS and WP Engine, adding audio narration with distinct voice selections tied to each Playbook’s writer.
The plugin allows users to embed a text-to-speech player directly at the top of any article. AWS offers a range of machine learning-based language services that allow companies to easily add intelligence to their applications through pre-trained APIs – without the need for deep AI expertise.
We want Europe’s policymakers, regulators, and thought leaders to read our newsletters as much as possible, as frequently as possible, and as early as possible in the day. We’ve found that when people read POLITICO earlier in the day, they’re more likely to read it again later in the afternoon and use us as their primary source of information.
